Welcome to Gorgeous!
We have three lovely huacaya alpacas, called Jazz, Tor and Caesar. Some of the yarn that you will use is actually from their fleece. The rest of the yarn is sourced from within the UK. We choose to use only undyed natural yarns, which restricts the colour palette, but we think the colour range you can get from nature is broad enough to find a natural colour to suit anyone.
Alpaca yarn is popular because it’s so soft, durable, luxurious and silky. While similar to sheep’s wool, it is warmer, not prickly, and has no lanolin, which makes it hypoallergenic. The fibre has a unique hollow quality that means it keeps you warm when it's cold, but keeps you cool when it's hot. It means it's also naturally water-repellent and difficult to ignite. As evidence, we wear our hats in the rain and come in with totally dry hair ... so finally, knitwear that you can wear in wind, rain and sunshine!
Huacaya alpacas grow soft spongy fibre, which has a natural crimp. This crimp makes a naturally elastic yarn well-suited for knitting. The alternative alpaca fibre is from a suri alpaca, which has no crimp so popular for weaving.
